Not sure what the sharing economy is? The definition below can help. And what about all the existing terms, i.e. peer economy, on-demand economy, gig economy, circular economy, etc.? A dictionary of commonly used terms can make things clearer.

Sharing Economy Definition:

"The sharing economy involves using internet technologies to connect distributed groups of people and organisations to make better use of goods, skills, services, capital and spaces, sharing 'access' and so reducing the need for 'ownership'." (SEUK)

Sharing Economy – Global and European Overview

The sharing economy, which uses technology to enable people to share everything from cars and homes to skills and knowledge, is fundamentally changing how people work and live. And it is rapidly growing and creating new opportunities – by 2025, the global sharing market is expected to reach $335 billion.

Within Europe, considerable growth is predicted over the coming year with nearly a third of all consumers set to take part in the sharing economy. The European Commission is encouraging countries to actively embrace the sharing economy and will publish guidelines this year on how member states should regulate sharing economy industries.

Dynamic sharing economy organisations and initiatives are taking shape throughout Europe (Sharing Economy UK – the new trade body for the UK's sharing economy; shareNL - the Dutch knowledge and network platform for the collaborative economy; OuiShare - a Paris-based non-profit connecting the global collaborative economy; Barcelona Sharing Accelerator - an open startup accelerator focused on responsible sharing projects; Berlin Share Fare – a fare for startups, non-profits, social businesses and initiatives; Coworking Europe - an annual conference featuring the rise of coworking; University of Oxford’s SAID Business School, UK – launched the first sharing economy MBA course.)

Sharing Economy in Ireland

Ireland already offers a growing number of collaborative platforms and initiatives from transport, finance, lodging, learning, services, and more. Some of the sharing economy's leading global companies (Airbnb, Etsy, Udemy) have set up European headquarters or regional offices in Dublin and other prominent collaborative economy companies (CurrencyFair, CoderDojo and more) have scaled from startup to multicounty success within Ireland's supportive entrepreneurial and enterprise eco-system.

Businesses are increasingly using peer-to-peer or crowdfunding platforms like GRIDFinance or LinkedFinance to scale and grow. FoodCloud is connecting businesses that have too much food to charities in their communities that have too little.

Dublin has a growing list of mobility, finance, travel, food sharing, co-working, making and personal and professional collaborative initiatives – with other cities North and South also offering a variety of sharing economy opportunities.

Ireland - a Future Global Sharing Economy Center?

With a vibrant digital startup eco-system, cities that serve as tech hubs for many multinational IT companies, a highly skilled workforce, and leading academic and research institutions exploring Smart Cities research - Ireland has the potential to become a global sharing economy leader.
